Monday was by far the best day weather wise. Evelyn and Jameson woke up early to go fishing but no bites. Our plan for the day was to hike in the Red River Gorge. We thought we were headed to one trailhead but actually ended up at another; the spotty cell service made it hard to use the map on our phones. But the hike we ended up doing was fun. We started down in the gorge and followed a creek until we started to climb up.
After climbing and consulting some maps, we realized that unless we wanted to hike another mile out and back, we weren’t going to see an arch. Which was disappointing but the kids were getting tired and hungry. So we decided to follow the trail to a different trailhead which hooked up with a trail that would loop back to the car. Still a substantial hike but it felt like we did all that work to not see anything cool. However this route took us past Daniel Boone’s hut, a giant rock shelter that some claim Boone used as a camp spot, which was pretty cool.
We made it back to the car, ate a couple snacks and decided since the weather was so nice we should do as much as we could in the gorge. We drove up and around the gorge along the scenic highway to a trailhead where we made sandwiches for lunch and then did a short hike to Whistling Arch. A little underwhelming but still pretty.
Next up was a drive up and into the gorge to Chimney Top Rock and Princess Arch. Chimney Top gave us a beautiful panoramic view of the gorge.
Princess Arch, one of prettiest arches, was fun to explore. We were the only people there, so we took our time enjoying the views and relaxing.
Nate and I probably could have kept hiking but Evelyn and Jameson were ready to go back to camp. It had been a full day. We found a cute ice cream shop on the way back to the campground. The rain stayed away so we made foil packets for dinner and enjoyed a long campfire before bed.
