My mom told me before my aunt and uncle arrived from Illinois that if Nate had any projects around the house, my Uncle Dean would be happy to help. I couldn't have imagined that would turn into fixing up an old shed into a chicken coop and equipping it with 3 new hens. But that's what we did this weekend. (We did some other stuff too.)
We got our chickens in Vinton from a gentleman who had several hens, roosters, and turkeys. We were happy to give our hens a new, less crowded place to live.
Then we had to fix up the shed - make a door, build a nesting box, board up all the holes, add a window, and create a little outdoor pen so we can call our hens "free range."
They seem really happy in their new coop and I'm already thinking about all the stuff I can make with my fresh eggs. The gold one is a Golden Comet. Her name is Dolly. The darker red one is, we think, a Rhode Island Red. Aunt Martha named her Big Red. The multicolored hen is an Ameraucana and she lays blue-green eggs. We named her Martha after my aunt.

On Sunday we went to this nice winery just 10 miles up the road from our house. It was a perfect day and the leaves looked so colorful. The wine was good too.
